Finished projects – A Regency evening robe

This is the mad project that had me disappear for most of the week before last. It is a very simple and easy Regency over-robe, with a bodice roughly based on Arnold’s apron front 1798-1805 dress(without the front) and a simple gathered skirt. This robe definitely wasn’t on my to-do list, but I had the gorgeous Alexa over to model quick and easy Regency gowns for a photo shoot, and she looked so great in my cheater “cut two holes for arms” version of the robe that I was inspired to sew it up as a proper garment so that she could wear it for the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies ball. This is the “cut-two-holes-for-arms” version. Alexa wore the robe over my little sister’s purple satin prom dress (which I made a few years ago. Friday review – Asia Gallery Wellington

Asia Gallery Kilbirnie, Wellington, New Zealand What it is:  an Asian, particularly Japanese, themed antique store/junk shop (in the best possible sense). It’s crammed to the brim with kimono and obi and Japanese furniture and ceramics and jewellery, and pretty much everything else that you could possible dream of!  The owners make a number of trips to Japan a year to collect items to sell. The gallery is just off the main street in Kilbirnie on the airport side, but can be a bit tricky to find as it is tucked down an alley. The Good: The Gallery is full of gorgeous textiles and objects d’art, many at very reasonable prices.  There are fully embroidered vintage kimono and obi for sale for thousands of dollars… …and simpler, but equally lovely examples starting at $25 for kimono and $10 for obi…  …and best of all, a scrap bin of old kimono for only $5 each There are vintage purses ranging in price from $10 to $80 There are adorable dolls And rolls of mysterious parchment and …
